Create your first domain and perimeter

Everything you create in CyberGuard lives inside a domain — the container that groups your work and controls who can see it. Inside a domain, an optional perimeter names exactly what a given assessment covers: a product, a system, a process, a contract. Creating one of each is the first thing to do in a fresh workspace, and the prerequisite for your first audit and risk assessment.

Create a domain

1. In the sidebar, open Organization → Domains.

2. Select Add domain.

3. Give the domain a Name — for a first try, something like Domain1 or the name of your department works fine — and optionally a Description.

4. Save. CyberGuard creates the domain along with a set of user groups, one per built-in role, scoped to this domain.

Note

Roles in CyberGuard are granted per domain: adding a user to one of the domain’s user groups gives them that role on everything inside the domain. You can do this later from Organization → User groups — see Users, groups and roles.

Create a perimeter

1. Open Organization → Perimeters.

2. Select Add perimeter.

3. Enter a Name for what you are assessing — a product, an information system, a business process.

4. Choose the Domain you just created so the perimeter is attached to it. You can also set an internal reference and a status (Design, Development, Production, End of life, Dropped) to reflect where the assessed scope stands in its lifecycle.

5. Save.

Domain or perimeter — which do I need?

A useful mental check when your structure grows:

• Different people need to see different things? Use separate domains — they are the access-control and reporting boundary. One domain per department, subsidiary or customer is a common pattern.
• Same audience, but separate assessments per scope? Use perimeters inside one domain. Everyone with access to the domain sees all of its perimeters; there is no per-perimeter access control.

An assessment without a perimeter is simply scoped to its whole domain, so do not over-engineer this on day one — one domain and one perimeter is enough to start, and objects can be reorganized later.

Tip

If you would rather explore with realistic content first, the first-login dialog (and the Get started button in the top bar) offers to load a demo domain populated with sample assessments. You can delete it whenever you are done experimenting.
